Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP Sensor) Core Function:
The Crankshaft Position Sensor is one of the most critical sensors in a modern engine. Its primary job is to monitor the rotational position and speed (RPM) of the crankshaft and send this real-time data to the Engine Control Unit (ECU).
Detailed Description:
1. What It Monitors:
Position: It tells the ECU exactly where each piston is in its cycle (Top Dead Center, etc.).
Speed: It calculates engine Revolutions Per Minute (RPM) by measuring how fast the crankshaft's trigger wheel is spinning.
2. How It Works:
The sensor is mounted close to a reluctor ring (or trigger wheel), which is a toothed ring attached to the crankshaft, flywheel, or harmonic balancer. As the crankshaft rotates, the teeth pass by the sensor tip.
Magnetic (Variable Reluctance) Type: Generates an analog alternating current (AC) voltage signal as each tooth disrupts its magnetic field. The frequency of the signal equals RPM.
Hall-Effect Type: Uses a digital on/off signal triggered by the teeth. It is more precise at low speeds and is commonly used in modern vehicles.
The pattern of the teeth (often with one or two gaps) allows the ECU to identify the crankshaft's exact position for cylinder #1.
